To
be a Maverick Marketer does not mean to be a contrarian or rebel just for the
sake of doing so but rather, it means being different for the reason of
getting more than your fair share. -Ed Rigsbee, CSP
Samuel
Augustus Maverick (July 23, 1803–September 2, 1870) was a Texas lawyer, politician, land baron and signer of the Texas Declaration of
Independence. His name is the source of the term "maverick," first
cited in 1867. Various accounts
of the origins of the term held that Maverick came to be considered
independently minded by his fellow ranchers because he refused to brand his
cattle. In fact, Maverick's failure to brand his cattle let to the unexpected
byproduct of getting more than his fair share; as any “lost” calves
without a brand were considered to be his.
From
1974 through 1990, Ed Rigsbee held positions in outside sales; territory
representative, sales manager, VP of Sales, and owner of a manufacturers
representative organization. During this time he learned, developed, and
improved his foundational skills for today's work in helping small and
medium-sized business to stretch their marketing dollar in ways that put them
in front of the herd. In the early 1990s Ed published Maverick Marketing booklets
and videos to better help business leaders to "get more than their fair
share." Since, he has been imitated by others claiming to be Maverick
Marketers, however Ed is the original. To
